Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families

About Legacy Corps

Legacy Corps is a national AmeriCorps program that provides free, non-medical support to veterans, military families, and their caregivers. Funded by AmeriCorps and administered through Arizona State University (ASU), the program is designed to support caregivers in keeping their loved ones at home longer and reducing the need for facility-based care.

Through trained volunteers, we offer companionship, emotional support, and much-needed breaks for caregivers—helping veterans and older adults stay safe, supported, and independent in their own homes.

WHAT WE DO

We match dedicated volunteers with families to provide:

  • Weekly Respite Visits – Give caregivers a break while we keep their loved ones company.
  • Meaningful Activities – Lighthearted moments through games, puzzles, or favorite shows.
  • Supportive Presence – Volunteers notice changes early and provide emotional reassurance.
  • Errand Help – Assist with small trips like picking up medications or grocery runs.

  • Spouses and caregivers of veterans
  • Older adults (60+) in military families
  • Caregivers seeking reliable, regular support

What you'll do

As an AmeriCorps member, you’ll provide weekly in-home respite and companionship for veterans or military-connected individuals so their caregivers can take a much-needed break.
(No medical or personal care involved — just meaningful connection.)

You’ll be matched with a family and visit regularly to offer support, conversation, and fun activities like puzzles, watching TV, or simply sharing stories.

WHO CAN be part of legacy corps?

Legacy Corps provides services to veterans and military families residing in San Diego County. Caregivers of veterans are welcome to inquire about respite support, and those interested in volunteering as an AmeriCorps member are encouraged to apply.
